After a series of bomb explosions went off on London mass transit today reportedly killing at least 37 and wounding 700, the government of the People’s Republic of China was quick to issue a statement condemning the terrorist attacks. The statement from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the parties responsible.
“Regardless of the motive, anyone who creates terrorist attacks and causes civilian casualties should be resolutely condemned,” said spokesperson Liu Jianchao. China will continue to cooperate with the international community to strengthen the fight against terrorism, he added. British authorities are still investigating who is behind the attacks.
After the explosions, Hong Kong’s main immigration office received 27 calls from Hong Kong residents seeking assistance contacting relatives in London, according to Ming Pao News. There are approximately 23,328 Hong Kong immigrants and 13,776 immigrants from China’s mainland living in London, according to a 2001 survey from National Statistics in the United Kingdom.
A spokesperson for China’s Security Bureau said that Hong Kong residents who are in London can contact the Chinese embassy or the Hong Kong Immigration Department Bureau’s 24 hour hotline for updates.
